In the following report for the Sierra Nevada Ally, I explored the search for critical minerals in the state of Nevada. As part of my research, I explored how an influx of funding to the U.S. Geological Survey and the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology that came from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is being used to understand the geologic make-up of various Nevada regions. The surveys aim to understand the viability of critical mineral mining in the state, which coincides with the need for renewable energy technology development in response to climate change.
Featured in this report are the following subject matter experts I interviewed:
- Lyndsay Ball, a research geophysicist at the Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center in Denver, Colorado,
- Jim Faulds, director of the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology
- Warren Day, science coordinator of Earth MRI
